Both explanations are probably true, depending on whether you take an expansive, zoomed-out perspective, or a more immediate, zoomed-in perspective. In some species, such as redlip blennies , both polygyny and polyandry are observed. Furthermore, the oxytocin levels of the couples correlate positively; when the oxytocin secretion of one increases the other one also increases. Sexual monogamy is also rare among animals. In other words, they had plenty of sex even when pregnancy was impossible — such as when they were already pregnant, or while lactating just following birth. The simplest explanations for that pattern suggest that the rats' behaviour is adaptive because a diversity of foods allows them to ingest a wider range of nutrients, or maybe because it allows them to avoid overdependence on a possibly limited food source. A combination of terms indicates examples where levels of relationships coincide, e. This view is considered a misconception by some scholars. An example of overlooking behaviour relates to descriptions of giraffe mating: One indication that animals enjoy sexual activity is the act of masturbation. Prairie voles have a greater number of oxytocin and vasopressin receptors compared to montane voles, and are therefore more sensitive to those two neurohormones. This does not require contact; it is mediated by scent alone. In earlier periods, bias tended to support what would now be described as conservative sexual mores.
