PETER PAN: THE BOY WHO HATED MOTHERS – The Style of Make Believe

Costume Designer Brandon R. McWilliams
Talks About His Vision For This Childhood Classic

After meeting with adapter and director Michael Lluberes, I began to desire to tell a story of neglect through these characters, so it became important to show this disheveled quality in the clothing.  The design is quite stark and melancholy; the silhouette is loosely Victorian and the color pallet a bit gloomy. It’s simple but very deliberate.  When you have the opportunity of working with characters that live so vividly in the minds of many western theatregoers it can by such a thrilling and daunting task.  You must strive to find a balance between honoring the expectation of the icon and at the same time move them visually into a new world created for this particular incarnation of the myth.

Brandon R. McWilliams (Costume Designer) holds a BFA in Theatre Studies from The University of Texas at Austin and an MFA in Costume Design from the prestigious Carnegie Mellon School of Drama.  He has designed regionally for the past ten years and is the recipient of the Zelma H. Weisfeld USITT Costume Design Award, two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Shrader Kimberly Award in Costume Design and the Texas Educational Theatre Association’s Founder’s Scholarship in Design.  Brandon’s work has been on display at the Prague Quadrennial ’07, as well as at the Carnegie Mellon University campus in Qatar.  He has taught as Assistant Professor of Costume Design at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  www.brmcwilliams.com
